Food Tip
While roasted red peppers are available in cans and jars, fresh is always best. To roast your own, slice a pepper and place pieces on a sheet pan. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and a little extra virgin olive oil, and cook for approximately 20 minutes in a 400°F oven. Try roasting other types of peppers, or a different vegetable, such as zucchini or Roma tomatoes. Roasting adds great color, aroma and deep flavor to any meal.
Meat Pairing Guide: Ham
Smoked Ham Cubano
PREP TIME: 10 MINUTES, SERVES 1
The Cuban is Latin America's delicious take on our revered ham and cheese sandwich. Here, the smoky richness and sweetness of the ham is counterbalanced by the sharpness and tanginess of the whole grain mustard and Swiss cheese. For an even more authentic version, add a little roasted pork or pickle.
1 (6-inch) Cuban roll, split in half
1 tablespoon whole grain mustard
3 slices HORMEL® NATURAL CHOICE™ Deli Smoked Ham
2 tablespoons store-bought red pepper relish or Roasted Red Pepper Relish*
2 slices Swiss cheese
Cooking spray
Pickle spear, if desired
Spread the cut surface of roll with mustard. Layer ham, red pepper relish and cheese on bottom half of roll. Cover with top half of roll. Spray the surface of preheated sandwich press with cooking spray. Cook the sandwich on sandwich press until evenly toasted golden brown and the cheese is melted.
